need a fair amount of free memory during a save-application.

If you do a room and you ain't got much left, you're in trouble.
One thing is to try to do the gc yourself right before the
save-application, and, obviously, before that, do what you can to free up
memory.

This is all from the gut here, because, as you note, when you freeze up,
there's no way of telling what went wrong.  Most annoying.
