connecting to fileservers w/in mcl

Using system 7.1 fileshare over appletalk with mcl, is there any way to check
whether the device for a filename is currently connected and, if not, to
establish the connection?  For example, if my code references,
"Joes:flimsy:system:file.lisp" and "Joes" is a device accessible through
appletalk on someone else's computer but to which I don't have a current
connection, I would like the authentication/identification box to come up and
then the connection made.
