Color menus on a Quadra

I have a program which colors some of its menu items orange at times.  I
originally developed the code on a Mac IIci, and it worked fine.  Now I am
using a Quadra 950.  The Quadra totally ignores any attempts to color its
menu items.  Is there any way around this problem?
