I'm not sure if he has mentioned this to you, but Bill Schelter (wfs@rascal.ics.utexas.edu) has recently got KCL running on a Compaq 386, using the Gnu C Compiler. The performance is extremely good, about 2/3 the speed of a Sun 3/280 or 3/60.
