invisible font stuff

I think the point Bill Jones was making is that these invisible font
directives are somehow appearing in files from no apparent source.
At least that is what I have experienced.  And I know of at least
one other person who has experienced the same problem.  That seems
to point to some possible bug, but I have no idea of what sort of
bug it might be.  Have others also found that these font directives
appear in files from nowhere?
