error writing ascii to tar tape

I am having trouble writing an ascii file to a tar tape under Genera 8.0
on a 3650.  Since I suspect, there is an 'easy' answer, please e-mail
to me rather than posting to SLUG.  Detalis follow:
Type tape host or spec [default Local: Cart, reclen=10240]:
Writing <filename>
Trap: the SYS:%BITBLT-LONG-ROW microcode ran into an ARRAY-WORD that
was not a fixnum.
