colour drawing on remote X screens

the X11 documentation for the LISPM claims that (p17) "if the X server
host has color display hardware, you can draw in color by ising the
:color argument to the graphics:draw-xx functions."

:color can be :red, :green etc.

Has anyone been sucessful in getting this to work?  My color X server,
(a sun running X11.4) just draws my strings in black...  Is it a
protocol thing between X11.3 and X11.4?
