    anybody know off-hand what the format of this header is or where I could find the information ?

It's approximately the MacBinary format, which is a semi-official
Apple/MAUG standard for encoding both forks in a single byte stream
(such as modem downloads).

I'll send you along some code which describes it (and how it deviates
from the standard) under separate cover.
