layouts and telnet

Can anyone give me any suggestions on saving window layouts across
boots?  The 'layouts' option in the system menu is of little help; it
is not saved across boots.  Besides that, it only saves the location
of the exposed windows and there's no way that I can see that one can
delete an entry from the layouts menu.

Also, has anyone used the telnet session extensively and perhaps come
up with a better terminfo/termcap for it than vt100?  That terminfo
works pretty well with gnuemacs, but not well with other programs like
vi or less.  I've tried using the xterm terminfo and that's better but
it still has some problems.
