Yes, that is the correct approach.

The version you are looking at draws into the undisplayed memory in the
frame buffer, which is not visible if the monitor is adjusted correctly
(it's covered by the plastic bezel), but can be made visible if the
horizontal width control is turned down a little, which obviously a lot
of people do.  The X Windows equivalent is to put it in its own X Window,
which the user can position next to the Genera screen X Window.
