Continual Backups?

I received the following suggestion from someone in our lab. Has anyone
implemented this? If not, it sure sounds like a good idea.

So maybe the answer to the file backup problem, maybe depending on
getting source code, is to have the backerupper always running with low
or negative priority, and constantly saving files (incrementally) to the
always mounted tape. When the tape runs out, it should send a message
to all users that someone should mount a new tape. It should also
gensym its own tape labels and names. Seem reasonable?
