hi -- let me suggest two slight refinements on that, both from Multics:
o don't save any file that's less than an hour old (or maybe a different time
  delay would be more appropriate), and
o have TWO backeruppers running, writing to tapes on different machines...that
  way, you get two advantages:
  - a single hardware failure while you're writing can't destroy all of your
    backup copies, and
  - that way you get redundant backup copies right away, so you can store one
    off site so a single fire or hardware failure while you're reading can't
    destroy all your backups...
